Economic Stimulus
In early 2009, as signs of a slowdown emerged, Congress passed the American Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). Of the $790 billion approved in the Federal Stimulus Package, $130 billion is dedicated to construction-related projects. With stimulus money trickling down to worksites, now is the time to seize available opportunities.

The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) provided answers for commercial building professionals on what steps need to be taken in order to be considered for ARRA funded projects. According to the NRCA, there are three mandatory steps for companies to be considered for any government contracting. A company must:

  • A company must be issued a Data Universal Numbering System number from Dun & Bradstreet Inc., which can be obtained at no cost through the company's Web site.

Firestone Building Products roofing systems and accessories qualify for the "Buy American" restriction for construction materials used on federal buildings and public works funded through the ARRA. The following is a breakdown of the Stimulus Package and where Firestone systems are recommended:

Energy - $6.3 billion for energy-efficiency upgrades and renewable energy efforts - Firestone ISOGARD HD and EnviroReady System and Warranty are relevant and ISO 95+GL has the highest R-value per inch.
Buildings - $11.83 billion for specific government building retrofit, modernization and construction. All Firestone systems are relevant.
Schools - $39.5 billion for local school districts and school modernization. All Firestone systems are relevant.
Defense/Veterans - $7.8 billion for facility construction/upgrades with emphasis on hospitals, medical facilities, child-care centers and military projects. All Firestone systems and warranty options are relevant.
Transportation - $1.1 billion for airport improvement program construction grants - Firestone UltraPly TPO systems are recommended.
