LEED Pilot Credits
September 17, 2010
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) established a series of Pilot Credits for the LEED Green Building Rating System. These pilot credits are designed to test and encourage the application of new initiatives and may be included in the LEED rating system in future versions.
Pilot Credit 2
is titled “PBT Source Reduction: Dioxins and Halogenated Organic Compounds.” The intent of this credit is to reduce the release of persistent bioaccumulative toxic chemicals (PBTs) in building materials. In particular, halogenated organic compounds (HOCs) are of the most concern. HOCs are targeted due to their persistence and propensity to dioxin formation. The most common HOC is polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
Four groups of materials are covered by this credit:
Exterior components – “at a minimum, roof membranes, waterproofing membranes, window and door frames, siding” USGBC
Interior finishes
Piping, conduit and electrical boxes
Electrical cable and wire jacketing
To qualify for this credit, three of the four groups must have at least 75% of its materials manufactured without added HOCs. In most cases, this means non-PVC products. Firestone impacts the “exterior components” group. The roof covers about one sixth of the exterior building area; therefore, the selection of non-PVC roofing membrane can make a significant contribution to the requirements of this credit.
Firestone offers several non-PVC roofing systems. In fact, Firestone does not sell PVC roofing systems. In 2005, Firestone began a voluntary phase out of PVC membrane sales due to concern for human health and the health of the environment. This decision is consistent with the Bridgestone and Firestone environmental policies. To learn more about Firestone’s commitment to the environment, visit the

Bridgestone Environmental Mission Statement
.
Firestone’s non-PVC options include
UltraPly TPO
, RubberGard LSFR and
EcoWhite EPDM
,
UNA-CLAD metal
and
modified bitumen
roofing systems.
Each of these options provides the building owner with a proven, sustainable roofing system that is environmentally friendly, covered by the highly regarded Firestone Red Shield Warranty, and compliant with LEED Pilot Credit 2.
