SkyScape Vegetative Roof System
November 17, 2010
Firestone’s SkyScape Vegetative Roof Systems are now available as either an Extensive Tray System or a Multi-layer Intensive System, both offering multiple planting options.
The benefits of a SkyScape vegetative roof continue to grow.- Creates an insulated layer that makes heating and cooling systems more efficient
- Provides UV protection and shields the roof from wind and hail damage
- Improves storm water management by retaining more than 70% of storm water that would otherwise overtax municipal systems
- Decreases ambient air temperature, thereby reducing the overall heat island effect in cities
- Holds enough carbon dioxide in one square meter to offset the carbon footprint of a typical family car for a year
- SkyScape vegetative roofs are eligible for LEED points and are protected by the exclusive Firestone Red Shield Warranty (up to 30 years), including an Overburden Warranty and Plant Warranty.
Talk to your local sales representative to find out more about the quotation and ordering process and the warranty requirements for a SkyScape Vegetative Roof.
Firestone roofing products – insulation, cover boards, and single-ply membranes provide a sound basis for installing a SkyScape roof garden. The following are recommended:
All roofing membranes used under a SkyScape system must by fully adhered. Warrantable systems must include an adhered ISOGARD HD, Resista, or DensDeck Prime coverboard over mechanically attached or adhered ISO 95+.
Prior to Installation
Before installation, it is vital to have trained professionals inspect and verify that the roof has no leaks and can support the specified roof garden. - A certified structural engineer must be contacted prior to installation to ensure that the deck can withstand the weight of the saturated vegetative trays, specified roofing system and any other live or construction loads.
- A minimum roof slope of ¼” in 12” should be provided to ensure proper drainage at the waterproofing level. The SkyScape tray shall not be installed over a 2” in 12” slope to avoid slippage.
- The SkyScape Vegetative Roof System should be installed between April 1 and November 1, but not when the weather is below 45 ºF (7.2 ºC) or above 95 ºF (35 ºC).
- Precaution must be taken when trays or the multi-layer system are installed in high wind areas. Please contact Firestone Roofing Solutions at 1-800-428-4511, should the project be located in an area that is prone to high wind events.
- Prior to installation of the SkyScape trays or multi-layer system, install a sacrificial layer of EPDM or TPO directly over the roofing membrane.
- When installing trays, do not drag into position. Use caution when lifting trays into place.
- Firestone does not review or calculate dew point analyses and therefore, does not accept responsibility for damage due to recurrence or location of dew point. Although not all projects require a vapor retarder, a design review should be considered for all projects to determine if a vapor retarder is necessary.
Substrate Preparation- Sweep with broom and then use air compressor to blow remaining dust and debris from substrate.
- Unroll the Firestone Protection Layer, then overlap the adjacent side laps a minimum of 3” and end laps a minimum of 6”.
- Extend layer up penetrations and vertical surfaces past the height of the tray.
